and it tastes good? sure does! right... ♪ wow. delicious, right? yeah. it's the honey, it makes it taste so... ♪ well, would you look at the time... what's the rush? be happy. be healthy. good evening. we begin tonight with a heart story on the peninsula. a mini van hit and kill a 6-year-old girl in the parking lot of a church today. her mother and one other adult were also injured at st. andrews catholic church in daly city.d d kimberly joins us with more on this. >> reporter: these are the markings left behind by investigators who were here for hours today piecing together

what led to that fatal accident. this parking lot at st. andrews church was busy this morning. mass was about to begin at 9:00 and catechism was getting underway. police say it hit a mother, her child and another woman. >> it's shocking to me. >> we don't know what happened. we just see someone is crying for help. >> crews rushed all three victim to san francisco general hospital where the 6-year-old girl died. the two women, one 45, the other, 46 years old, are still in the hospital. parishioners prayed for the families involved. >> we got the call at 8:58. police say they have been affected by what happened. >> it was very sad, not just for the people who were there who may have seen it but the officers who responded. when you see anybody hurt, especially a child.

a lot of us are fathers and it does hurt. >> the driver was not injured and police say she is cooperating with their investigation. she has not been cited or arrested while an investigation is ongoing. police say they do view this right now as an accident. live in daly city, nbc news. >> thank you. in the east bay, detectives are investigating the death of a woman found in her home in hercules. police say the woman's husband called a neighbor to check in on his wife when she did not pick up up from the airport around 11:00 last night. they found the victim lying on the ground near what appeared to be blood on the floor. miss say the family's car, a 2011 sky blue subaru outback is also missing. it has an idaho license plate+4 number of 1 a 1 f 680. so far police have not made any arrests in this case and have not released any motive for the

killing either. also, 22 people are facing charges after a violent protest in san francisco. this is cell phone video of police in riot gear near california and battery streets. police say a group of demonstrators marched in that area, vandalizing cars and businesses along the way. when police intervene, protesters reportedly threw flares and bags of paint and rocks at the officers. one officer was hit in the head but is expected to be okay. many of the protesters wore masks, and police say some were armed with hammers. the visitors were warned, traffic can be terrible but today, getting into san francisco really was not terrible at all. here's a life look at the toll plaza. traffic is flowing smoothly and it has been flowing smoothly all day as well.

we have crews throughout the city and one in detroit, covering the oakland as. we want to begin with jamie sire who is at at&t park for the giants who suffered a tough loss. >> reporter: normally when the opposing pitcher leaves after eight pitches, it would bode well for the home team. unfortunately for the giants, they could not capitalize on that early opportunity and they do drop game one against the reds. >> they lost the starter there. you know, they brought in a pretty good one, too. latos is tough and when you're in the first game, just like us, we had starters who could go tonight. and he is available. and he came and did a great job on us. >> obviously we did not expect it. we expected to face both of them

so it is not like you know, latos wasn't going to pitch later in the series anyways. >> reporter: despite the loss, this team was encouraged by the way they were able to rally back in the late innings and hoping that that momentum can maybe carry over into sunday's game. the a's meanwhile also dropping their first game of the postseason in detroit and kate longworth has more on that. >> reporter: justin verlander was pitching on an extra day of rest but it didn't take him long to find his rhythm keeping the a's off balance. bob admitted that his players were frustrated at the plate but that will happen to you when you have 14 strikeouts on the night. 11 of those coming to verlander. >> he has the ability to shut it down when he needs to. he kind of cruises and does what he has to to get whatever to get a couple runners on. >> sometimes you just have to tip your hat and obviously, he gets tipped to a lot.

and he did that. >> same pitcher he's been in his whole career. he is using them conveniently for him and using them well. he reached back to the pitches that he needed to get. he is not the guy that is going to keep you from getting on base. when we did, he reached out and made the pitches he needs to make. >> reporter: as for the a's pitching staff interesting first reliever bob melvin call upon was pat nishack who made his first appearance since losing his son earlier this week. and he said it felt like no other as he felt like someone upstairs was looking down on him. nbc bay area news. >> and they are part of our team at comcast sportsnet. that's the spot for the best preand postgame coverage of the giants and the a's. there's plenty more to do in san francisco as well. let's bring in meteorologist rob for a quick look at the forecast. and can we expect a repeat of today? >> i wish we could have a day just as beautiful today.

clear skies, fantastic weather for the blue angels as they took to the air show around the bay area. clear skies and still clear skies in san francisco. you just saw it. there 59 degrees, close to 60 in oakland. the sea breeze is kick off. here is a little bit of a change for tomorrow. we're watching these areas of low clouds heading toward tomorrow morning. and i do think like we had this morning, patchy areas of locally thick fog in the north bay valleys. into san francisco, during the day tomorrow, we'll see partly cloudy skies. and some cooler temperatures, i think, especially for the coast and around the peninsula with bigger changes lurking as we get back to the workweek. we'll be about some showers showing up in the seven-day forecast. dia diane? and coming up, it was not all smooth sailing. one of team usa's boats capsized. you might be surprised what happened at the end of the race. they lived up to their

reputation once again. the blue angels took to the bay. if you missed it today, you still have a chance to see them. we'll explain coming up in a live report. ♪

people come back year after year. one of the big draws is fleet week, of course. and typically the stars of the show right there. the blue angels. nbc bay area's money francis is along the marina green with that part of the big weekend. hello, monty. >> reporter: good evening. everyone knows when the blue angels roar into town. you can hear them from miles

away. this is one of the best places to see them. and spectators did not go home tonight disappointed. >> this is amazing what these pilots do. and it also makes you feel a bit patriotic. it's wonderful. >> reporter: it was impossible not to their blue angels in san francisco today and for those who looked up, impossible to look away. flying in formation just 18 inches apart and approaching the sound barrier, for many the navy's f-18s are always fleet week's biggest highlights. it gab this morning with the parade of ships as vessels from the navy and coast guard traveled under the golden gate bridge and into the bay. but for 12-year-old wyatt jahue, it was all about what was flying overhead. >> i love the blue angels and the big giant planes. i love everything about airplanes. >> reporter: the air show included some impressive air

acrobatics and some high flying action from the air force's f-22 raptor. spectators were also wowed by a stealth bomber. many of the thousands who came to fleet week heeded warnings about not trying to drive into the city. we found a few who decided to take their chances. and were pleasantly surprised. >> we tried it and we did it and there was no traffic. got all the way into the presidio and parked for free and walked down here. >> reporter: fleet week continues in the city tomorrow. the blue angels take to the sky again at 3:00 p.m. live in san francisco, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> thanks a lot. still ahead at 11:00, a rough day for the giants and the a's as the two teams kicked off postseason play. we'll have more reaction from both clubhouses coming up in sports. will bring a slight chance of showers late monday and then all the way off and on as we go to the middle part of the week. for the end of the weekend, we've got some low clouds. some midday clearing. that should be some good news for theout door events and the air show. you can see this at 4:00. this is different than we saw yesterday. it looks like the futurecast, expecting some extra low clouds on the coast. clouds through 4:00 and then spilling back in as early as 7:00 in the evening. you will see the clouds even pushing toward san jose. 40s and 50s with some drizzle possible and a few spots near the coast. 72 in san jose. some mid 70s inland and our temperatures back toward oakland, near 70 degrees. mid 60s, san francisco, and some low 70s around the north bay. the seven-day forecast looks pretty interesting. especially toward monday and tuesday. increasing clouds and then as long as that low is on the central california coast, you'll have to leave in the chance of showers tuesday, wednesday, into

take a look at this dramatic surveillance video shows that white pickup truck slamming into the front of a liquor store, shootering the glass and coming with that inches of hitting the clerk. the crash happened around 10:00 last night in carmichael near sacramento. witnesses say the driver of the passenger took off after the crash. chp officers tracked down the suspected driver. a 34-year-old robert ring. he was arrested for felony hit and run and suspicion of driving under the influence. as for the clerk, he was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital and released. it had to be pretty scary though. september was a blockbuster fundraising month for president obama. the campaign announced it raised $181 million. that's the highest monthly total of the re-election campaign. the monthly haul was likely

boosted by tv exposure during the democratic national convention. a romney campaign spokesman said it has not released the september totals but noted in a tweet that romney raised $12 million in the 48 hours after the debate. both candidates are still talking about the latest unemployment numbers. the jobless rate is now below 8%. the president was thrilled with the news while the republican nominee was skeptical. >> more americans are entering the work forceful more americans are getting jobs. >> the number of people in america, the participation of our adults in the work force were the same as at the time he got elected. why our unemployment rate would be 11%. president obama is set to return to the bay area monday night. he will be fundraising at a concert in san francisco at the bill graham auditorium along with some high priced private fund-raisers. with the first presidential debate behind us, it is time for our factor fiction segment. mitt romney said during the

debate that president obama promised he would cut the deficit in half. and romney went on to say, unfortunately, he doubled it. first things first. the president did pledge shortly after he took office that he would cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. did he? he did not cut it in half but he did not double i either. if you used the congressional budget office's projections for the deficit at the time the president took office, the deficit has dropped slightly. about 8%. if you use the fiscal year 2009, after months after he took office, it down by 25%. so there. so there are countless reasons to spend time in san francisco this weekend and one of them is america's cup. nbc bay area's lawrence scott has a look. >> thank you so much. it was a tremendous day of racing. full of spills and chills and an action packed day. there is one champion crowned and another right on the doorstep. it was an absolutely wild day of racing on the america's cup

series. oracle day spithill first punching its way to the finals. and then they find themselves upside down and out of action. but spithill and crew would right the ship and rejoin the group of 11 in the second fleet race with a chance to get back on track before the twilight match race final. the troubles continued for the team usa. they were forced to deal with the malfunction. all the while, ben ainslie, the most decorated sailor in america history, continues his way. but in the grand finale, the match race finals just before sunset, oracle team usa spithill puts the capsize well behind them taking out dean barker and the emirates team new zealand to capture the round two title. and sunday fleet racing finals will be part of the nbc bay area coverage starting at 1:30 p.m.
